Airport/Port/Transit Hotel to Pinnawala
It is 90 Km from the Airport to Pinnawala, and it takes 2 hours to reach Pinnawala without stopping anywhere. There is no highway to Pinnawala.

The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage was established by the Sri Lankan Department of Wildlife Conservation in 1975 to feed and provide care and sanctuary to orphaned baby elephants found in the wild. The orphanage was located at the Wilpattu National Park, then shifted to the tourist complex at Bentota and then to the Dehiwala Zoo. From the Zoo, it was moved to Pinnawala village on a 25-acre (10 ha) coconut plantation adjacent to the Maha Oya River. Kandy’s Adhikaram Mudiyanse Family (Samarakkody Family) donated the land to the Sri Lank government.
Initially, the orphanage started with just five baby elephants. However, the number of orphans grew until 1995, when the Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC) established the Elephant Transit Home (ETH) near the Udawalawe National Park. This marked a significant shift in the orphanage’s operations. Since then, orphaned babies have been taken to the ETH Udawalawa, and most births have occurred there, contributing to the growth of the Pinnawala herd.

The Pinnawala Orphanage was designed as a sanctuary and a means to attract local and foreign visitors. The income generated from these visits is crucial in maintaining the orphanage. Over the years, the orphanage has evolved into a popular tourist attraction. In 1978, it was taken over by the Department of National Zoological Gardens Sri Lanka, and in 1982, an elephant breeding program was launched. The ticket price is $15.
Visitors to the park are in for a treat as they witness the elephants’ care and daily routine up close. They can observe,
The bottle-feeding of elephant calves.
Fruit-feeding elephants.
Seeing an Elephant from the pavilion.
Bathing in the Ma Oya River.
Elephant riding is not available in the orphanage.
However, private elephant conservation projects around the orphanage also provide rides. You have to buy tickets for riding. You can ask your tour guide for assistance; they know the reliable places.
Sri Lanka, known as the “Spice Island,” is famous for its lush green landscapes and aromatic spices. A visit to the spice gardens of Sri Lanka is a sensory delight, offering a unique opportunity to learn about the country’s rich spice heritage and experience the scents and flavors that have made it a culinary paradise. Visit Spice Garden in Mawanella.

Various organic herbs are known for their excellent medicinal, health, and longevity properties. Herbal medications are the world’s oldest medicinal practice for treating physical and psychological ailments.
Visit a Tea factory in Pilimathalawa, one of Sri Lanka’s primary sources of foreign exchange. Ceylon tea is recognized as Ceylon Tea and is renowned for its high–quality aroma and taste.

In over one hundred and fifty years, the name Ceylon had become synonymous with the world’s finest tea. In the world’s eye and tongue, Ceylon was tea, and tea was Ceylon. What Rolls Royce is to cars, Rolex is to watches, Havana is to cigars, Scotland is to whisky, and Ceylon is to tea. The legendary lion of the Sri Lankan flag was introduced to the Ceylon Tea logo to guard this commitment, the symbol of quality.
